Pendleton, OR -- Classified Connection, professional development hosted and organized by the Oregon Trail Regional Educator Network (REN) in collaboration with Pendleton Early Learning Center Principal, Angela Lattin, gathered for its final installment on April 3, 2024. The event drew 12 participants from Pendleton and Umatilla School Districts. This school year, the REN has hosted 3 Classified Connection events, drawing 55 total participants from the region.

The April 3rd event’s focus on Conscious Discipline—an evidence-based approach to social-emotional learning, behavior management, and self-regulation— drew paraprofessionals keen on enhancing their skills in creating supportive, safe, and engaging learning environments. The roundtable format also allowed for participants to engage in meaningful discussions and collaborate to address common challenges.

In 2024, the Oregon Trail REN partnered with Pendleton Early Learning Center Principal, Angela Lattin, to create Classified Connection. Lattin, who manages 13 paraprofessionals and support staff at the Early Learning Center in Pendleton, Oregon, recognized a need for more professional learning opportunities specifically designed for classified staff. “Paraprofessionals are the backbone of our schools,” Lattin said. “We rely on this group to work with some of our most challenging students.”

Looking ahead to next year, the REN intends to continue to prioritize the programming’s responsiveness to need. Regional Educator Network staff member Emily Williams emphasized, “During this final gathering, we took good notes about what training classified staff would like to receive for next year. I’m excited to align professional learning with regional needs. This group of educators makes such a difference for students.”

Classified Connection gatherings have historically occurred after school hours at local restaurants equipped with private space to feature speakers or view presentations. That format will continue in the 2024-2025 school year. The REN also plans to host future gatherings in locations outside of Pendleton.
